Breuer Marcel

Born in Pécs (Hungary) on May 21, 1902. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, at the time that Walter Gropius led this school of art and design where aesthetic catalyzed most important ideas of the modern movement. Breuer later took over the furniture workshop at the Bauhaus.
B3 chair, also known as Wassily chair, designed in 1925.
The B55 model chair in 1928.

They designed the B3 chair, made in 1925, the first steel tube in history, combining the flexible terms of this material with ease for large scale industrial production. This chair was the most widely recognized design Breuer, who later became known as the Wassily chair. I was inspired in part by bending the steel tube on the bicycle handlebar Adler that Breuer had recently acquired. Despite the widespread belief that he had designed for the painter Wassily Kandinsky, Breuer's colleague then at the Bauhaus school, this was not true;Kandinsky admired Breuer's final design, and only when he finished, Breuer made an additional copy for Kandinsky's use at home. When the chair was re-released in the early 60s, was named "Vassily"

Continued at the Bauhaus until 1928, when it was established in Berlin to pursue architecture, where he received his first architectural commission, a project to house Harnischmacher (Wiesbaden, 1932), a modular home built in concrete with steel . He also designed furniture stores Wohnbedarf Zurich.

In 1930, the Deutsche Werkbund commissioned to design interiors for the German section of the exhibition Société Fraçais decorateurs Artistes.

With the advent of the Nazi party to power Breuer was exiled because of his religion (Judaism), first in England (1933) and later in America (1937).There, along with Gropius, he taught at the School of Architecture at Harvard University, while continuing his architectural career with projects like his own home in Lincoln, Massachusetts (1939), where he used local materials.
Whitney Museum of American Art

Breuer dissolved his partnership with Gropius in May 1941 and later, in 1945 made its own the design of the Geller House I, the first to use the concept of housing binuclear Breuer characterized by having the wings separated and divided by the foyer, bedrooms on one side and the kitchen / dining / living room on the other.

In 1946 he opened a studio in New York, where he designed, along with the Italian Pier Luigi Nervi and Bernard Zehrfuss French, the new Unesco building in Paris.

In 1956 he founded in New York Marcel Breuer Associates, and at that time adopted the cement and construction material, and with it a new architectural language, brutal. Thus in 1966 he designed the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
